Ljubljana Forum Future of Cities

For the first time, Ljubljana Forum Award Steering Committee granted the Ljubljana Forum Award to the most innovative and effective practice of sustainable urban development.

The three nominees were:
1) PROJECT FOR WATER TRANSFER FROM THE BOSPHORUS TO THE GOLDEN HORN IN ISTANBUL
2) ADA BRIDGE IN BELGRADE
3) SMART WATER INFRASTRUCTURE OPERATION AND MAINTANANCE MANAGING in Public Utility ‘Belgrade Waterworks And Sewerage’

The criteria for Ljubljana Forum Award 2013 were:
1) The use of technology in an innovative manner
2) Underlining European identity and its uniqueness
3) Contextual territorial cohesion and emblematic
4) Creation of jobs, social inclusion and their accessibility

Following the criteria, this year’s Ljubljana Forum Award was granted to ADA BRIDGE IN BELGRADE!
ADA BRIDGE IN BELGRADEThe designers of the winning solution were the chief constructor engineer, Viktor Markelj, and architect Peter Gabrijelčič. The investor of the project was the city of Belgrade.
At the very promontory of Ada Ciganlija island, a 207 m high pylon was erected to enable two asymmetrical spans to cross the river by means of 80 steel backstay cables. The new bridge is 920 m long, with a span of 375 meters. The carriageway is 45 meters wide, with six lanes for road vehicles, two light rail railway tracks, and two pedestrian and cycling paths. This is the largest bridge surface in the world suspended by just one pylon. The bridge incorporates numerous superior characteristics and successfully meets many technical challenges.

Aim and objective of the annual Ljubljana Forum Award
The aim of the annual Ljubljana Forum Award is to identify, promote and reward innovative good practices in the field of developing future of cities. The objective is to award projects and project ideas from specific urban location or area that brings an added value for the South-East European region, brings an actual progress in urban, economic, technological and social development, and promotes the meaning and identity of Europe.
